In Memory of Beth Bohling

Beth Bohling, 86, the daughter of Blanch Emma (Wells) and Frank D. Snyder, was born July 24, 1922, at Davenport. She died unexpectedly last Wednesday, at her home in Superior.

Beth received her formal education attending the Davenport schools, graduating with the Class of 1939. She received her bachelor's degree from Midland College at Fremont, and earned her masters degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1978. Beth was the first woman in Nebraska to receive a masters in journalism from UNL. She worked for a period of time writing for a newspaper in Chicago.

On June 20, 1947, Beth married Arnold B. Bohling at Christ Lutheran Church in Davenport. They lived in Hastings, where she worked for the Tribune as their society editor from 1947 to 1950. They moved to Deshler in 1955 and then in 1957, moved to Superior to make their home. In 1965, Beth began her employment with the Superior public schools, teaching English, journalisn and speech classes. In 1974, she became a teacher at Hastings College in the journalism department. She later returned to teach again in Superior, retiring in 1987.

In 1986, she was proud to have been among the five finalists for the Nebraska Teacher of the Year. She was currently working as a free lance correspondent with the Hastings Tribune.

She also dedicated her time and talents as editor of the "Expressions" which is the publication for ELCA church women. She was passionately involved with SCARED (South Central Area Rallying to Eliminate Drugs), the American Cancer Society and the Lady Vestey planning committee. She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and the Superior Pawnee Computer Society. She was an admiral in the Nebraska Navy.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Arnold, on Aug. 1, 2002; a daughter, Nita, in 1987; and a sister, Phyllis Schricker.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Bohling, McCook, Martha Bohling, Denver, two grandsons, R. J. Bohling, Superior and Jason Wessel, Hastings; 11 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Jake Knapp, (Mildred, "Mickey"), Anchorage, Alaska and a brother, Dave Snyder, Wichita.

Services were Tuesday at the Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Harold Stromer and PMA Irvin Schleufer officiating. Burial was in the Davenport Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of arrangements.
